If your job search is getting stale, and it seems like you’re running out of options, try and revitalize your job search by following up on old help wanted advertisements and interviews. It works.
Hopefully you’re keeping good records of your job search activities. If you’re not doing this, you need to start. This revitalizing tip is going to be harder for you if you didn’t keep good records.
The first thing I want you to do is gather all of the old help wanted advertisements you applied to, and that can be through the Internet or any other source you used, and then I want you to gather all of the information on the actual interviews you had. Make a list of the ads and the interviews. See why you need to keep good records?
Do you want to know a little secret from a professional recruiter – an insider? Most of these positions on your list are still open and available. I said most, not all.
In my nearly twenty years of experience in the recruiting business, the companies are getting slower and slower when it comes to hiring. There are a ton of reasons why, but the fact of the matter is they are slower today than ever. Very frustrating.
Now here’s the great thing about your list of help wanted advertisements and the interviews you’ve had. When you follow-up and call each company these are “warm calls” not cold calls. Meaning, they know you so it’s more of a friendly call to see if they filled the position, you’re not calling the company cold and introducing yourself for the first time.
You are going to be surprised of how many positions are still open. When you call you might hear, “The position is still open” or “We filled the position, but the person is not working out” or “We couldn’t find anyone so we stopped looking” or “We filled the position, but we need another one” or “We filled the position, but the person quit and moved back to Kansas” and on and on it goes.
If the position is still available this is where you have to start selling yourself again. Discuss your qualifications and the reasons why you’re still interested in their company and position. State your case and push for an interview. Do this to each company on your list. I want you to do this with the companies you interviewed with and the ones you just sent your resume or CV to, but didn’t have an interview.
The reason why this will revitalize your job search is because of the constant change within companies. There is turnover in HR departments and hiring managers all the time. The person within the company that didn’t want to move forward with you the last time might be gone. Or, the company might have changed the requirements. Do you think they call each candidate to tell him or her this? No!
You have to stay proactive with your job search. Don’t wait around. Pick up the phone and follow-up on all of your interviews. Resend your resume to those old help wanted ads. Call these companies and express your interest again. Now you’re not sitting around wondering if that company ever filled the position, or if they ever received your resume, you will know. You’re in charge now!
If your job search is getting stale and it seems like you’re running out of options, try this revitalizing tip. You will be amazed at the results you will receive. I hope this helps.
Good luck to you!
