What do companies want when it comes to candidates? Is there anything new or mysterious? No! All companies want the exact same thing today they have wanted for years. Good people.
In my years of experience in the hiring and recruiting business nothing has changed. Oh the process has, but not the fact that companies want the same thing today that they wanted when I first got in the business. Good, reliable, people that do their job. That’s it!
If a company gets lucky and hires a real winner that’s great, but in reality companies just want good and reliable people that take pride in their work and perform in their job. If an employee goes up and beyond that, fantastic, but the backbone of any organization are the good people they have on their staff.
What does this mean to you? What are you? Are you one of these good people? Are you an exceptional employee? If you don’t know what you are, that’s a problem. Are you one of these employees that complain about everything and everywhere you go it’s never good enough for you? It’s always the company’s fault and never yours?
A term used in the business to describe this type of employee is, “high maintenance employee” which basically means an employee that constantly complains about everything. They do not take pride in their work, they’re not reliable, and certainly you cannot describe them as good people or the backbone of any company.
If you owned a company you would want to hire good people not a “high maintenance employee.” In other words, companies are looking for exactly what you would be looking for, if you owned your own company. Good, reliable, people. There isn’t today, or anytime in history, a mystery about what companies want in candidates.
So now that you know that every company wants in a candidate, when you’re interviewing you should emphasis the positive aspects of your background and the fact that you’re reliable and you take pride in your work. Stay positive about your industry and never bash or complain about past employers. What’s new in hiring these days? Nothing! Companies still want good people and so would you! I hope this helps.
Good luck to you!
